HISTORY OF THE MOTORLAND ÁRAGON

MotorLand Aragón is a premier racing venue located in Alcañiz, in the Aragón region of Spain. The circuit was opened in 2009.

MotorLand Aragón’s history dates back to 1965 when street races began in Alcañiz, a town in the province of Teruel, Spain. These early races took place on public roads, attracting motorsport enthusiasts and building a reputation for the region. However, due to safety concerns associated with road racing, the need for a permanent circuit became evident by the late 1990s.

The vision for MotorLand Aragón took shape in the early 2000s when local authorities, led by the government of Aragón, decided to build a modern motorsport complex that could host major international racing events. The circuit’s design was entrusted to Hermann Tilke, a renowned German architect famous for creating many modern Formula 1 tracks, and Pedro de la Rosa, a Spanish Formula 1 driver, who also contributed to the layout design. Construction began in 2007, and the facility was officially inaugurated in 2009.

The circuit quickly gained recognition in the motorsport world. In 2010, just a year after opening, it made its debut on the MotoGP World Championship calendar, stepping in as a replacement for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The track’s challenging layout and scenic backdrop made it an immediate favourite among riders and fans alike. It has since become a permanent fixture on the MotoGP schedule, known for delivering exciting and unpredictable races.

MotorLand Aragón also hosts a variety of other motorsport events, including the World Superbike Championship (WSBK), the European Le Mans Series, and various regional and national competitions. In addition to race events, the track has become a popular venue for testing, thanks to its diverse layout that includes fast straights, technical corners, and significant elevation changes.

Beyond its racing history, the complex includes a technology park and a karting track, reflecting its commitment to motorsport development and innovation. Today, MotorLand Aragón stands as a symbol of modern motorsport in Spain and continues to be a central hub for racing activities in the country.

The Aragón Grand Prix has been a staple on the MotoGP calendar since 2010, with several legendary riders claiming victory on the challenging MotorLand Aragón circuit.
